Sem 2 - NEA (Network Embedded System) assignment

Network Embedded Applications
SS ZG656
First Semester 2017-18
Assignment – 1
A fenced 100-acre plot consists of three buildings
                    • Manufacturing unit
                    • Packing area
                    • Surveillance

The manufacturing unit takes care of production of high pressure water tanks for nuclear and chemical plants using automatic equipment. The process is controlled and monitored using network. Manufacturing unit occupies area of 10 acres including manufacturing as well as control room equipment. Environmental conditions in this plant change quite frequently due varying temperature, noise and other ambient conditions.
The packing area is a warehouse occupies an area of 10 acres and is used for storing manufactured tanks. The tanks are stored in controlled environment such as temperature, light, pressure etc. so that the condition of tanks before dispatch remains at excellent quality.
The surveillance building monitors the external events all over the remaining 80 acres for intrusion detection, employee attendance and asset dispatch and raw material vehicles.
Question:
Which type of network embedded system(s) will you utilize for automating the entire processes? You can choose one or few of the categories mentioned below.
                    • Building automation
                    • Wireless sensor networks
                    • Automobile automation
                    • Industrial automation
Provide reasons (Major parameters and considerations) for choices along with assumptions.

Solution:

Manufacturing unit: Industrial Automation + WSN
Parameters to be monitored: Temperature, Pressure, Noise Level, Dust
Other Parameters: Machine, Robotic Arms, Monitoring & Control equipment
Requirements:
§  Process monitoring & control (include hazardous process)
§  Access Control – to allow only authorized entry & avoid eavesdropping
§  Surveillance – to monitor man, machine & material
§  Hard Real Time System implementation – for certain processes whose delayed output can be catastrophic
§  Safety implementation
There may be hazardous processes which cannot be controlled manually. Such processes can be controlled & monitored using wireless sensors or/and actuators network. Various machines will interact with each other & to the central Control Room using wired or/and wireless network. It can be Field Area Network which used wired network. So this Industrial Automation will be hybrid wireless-wireline system.

Packing area: Building Automation + WSN - Building automation systems aim at the control of the internal environment, as well as the immediate external environment of a building, or building complex.

Parameters to be monitored: Temperature, Pressure, Noise Level, Dust
Other Parameters: Intrusion monitoring

This area will require sensors & actuator network to monitor environmental parameters like Temperature, pressure, noise, dust etc. & adjust the actuators to control them. This can be achieved using combination of building automation and Wireless Sensor Network.

Surveillance: Building Automation
Parameters to be monitored: HVAC, Surveillance, Safety, Access control
Requirement:
§  Climate control which include HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning).
§  Employee access management & control.
§  Surveillance system inside the building as well as periphery of the whole plot.
§  Safety services such as fire alarm system and emergency sound system
§  Monitoring utilities such as power, gas, water supply.
§  Maintenance of internal transportation systems such as lifts, escalators, etc.

Building automation can be used to control HVAC, access control, Safety parameters of the Surveillance Building while for periphery surveillance the wired CCTV network can be used. CCTV system should have intrusion detection so as to raise alert to control room about the intrusion.
